Richland County Coroner Gary Watts is releasing the name of the individual who died as a result of drowning in the river behind Riverbanks Zoo, 500 Wildlife Parkway, Columbia, SC at approximately 6:00 p.m. on June 23, 2017.

Deslin Lamar Mitchell, date of birth 10/04/1989, of North Brown Street, West Columbia, SC went missing on Friday and his body was recovered from the river yesterday at approximately 2:15 p.m.  How Mr. Mitchell ended up in the river is not clear at this time.  An autopsy indicated the cause of death was due to drowning.

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC 

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts is releasing the name of the individual who died as a result of a shooting incident that occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. this morning.  The incident location was 1005 Fontaine Road, Columbia, SC.

William D. Archie, date of birth 03/04/1992, of Hillcrest Avenue, Columbia, SC, was transported from the scene by Richland County EMS to Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital ER where he died at 4:10 a.m.  An autopsy indicated that Mr. Archie died as a result of a gunshot wound to the lower body.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident.

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC 

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts is releasing the name of the individual who died as a result of a swimming incident in the Congaree River in the proximity of Gervais Street at Gist Street, Columbia, SC at approximately 11:00 a.m. on June 18, 2017.

Fredrick Ochieng Babu, date of birth 06/01/1982, of Mango Street, Andrews, SC, was swimming in the Congaree River when he became distressed and went missing.  His body surfaced on June 20, 2017 at 200 Senate Street, Columbia, SC and was recovered at approximately 5:20 p.m. 

An autopsy indicated that Mr. Babu died from asphyxiation due to drowning in the river.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts is releasing the name of the individual who died as a result of being involved in a single-vehicle collision last night at approximately 9:30 p.m.  The collision occurred at the intersection of Bluff Road and Flamingo Drive, Columbia, SC.

Mekahya Deonnese Prince, date of birth 12/13/1988, of Silver Spoon Lane, Elgin, SC, was the driver of a vehicle that left the roadway and stuck a brick house.  Ms. Prince was transported from the scene and taken to Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital ER where she died at 10:30 p.m.  An autopsy indicated that the cause of death was due to blunt head trauma.

The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts is releasing the name of the individual who died as a result of being involved in a shooting incident that occurred yesterday at approximately 4: 20 p.m.  The incident occurred at the intersection of Leesburg and Patterson Roads, Columbia, SC.

Deangelo Prometheus Henderson, date of birth 06/26/1996, of Hickory Ridge Road, Columbia, SC, was transported from the scene by Richland County EMS and taken to Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital ER where he died at 5:15 p.m.  An autopsy indicated the cause of death was due to gunshot wounds to the torso.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident.

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts is releasing the names of the two individuals who died as a result of a single-vehicle collision that occurred yesterday evening at 6:00 p.m. in the 8200 Block of Bluff Road, Gadsden, SC.

Angela Theresa Ravenell, date of birth 12/13/1980, of Moore Lane, Gadsden, SC, was the driver of a vehicle that left the roadway, collided with a tree and burst into flames.  Ms. Ravenell was entrapped in the vehicle and died at the scene.  An autopsy indicated the cause of death was due to blunt trauma of the neck and torso.

Miss Shakiah Nehemiah Goodwin, date of birth 05/06/2011, of Moore Lane, Gadsden, SC was an entrapped passenger in the vehicle and died at the scene.  An autopsy indicated the cause of death was due to combined effects of thermal injury and smoke inhalation.

A third passenger has been transported to the Augusta Burn Center in Augusta, GA.

The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts is releasing the name of the individual who died as a result of a shooting incident that occurred on May 27, 2017 at approximately 10:15 p.m.   The incident location was 900 Taylor Street, Columbia, SC.

Laron L. Martin, date of birth 11/17/1979, of Carroll Drive, West Columbia, SC was transported from the scene by Richland County EMS to Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital where he died at 2:37 a.m. on May 28, 2017.  An autopsy indicated that the cause of death was due to a gunshot wound to the torso.

The Columbia Police Department is investigating the incident.

At a press conference held today at 1:00 p.m. at the Richland County Coroner’s Office at 6300 Shakespeare Road, Columbia, SC, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts released the cause of death of Davis Allen Cripe.  Mr. Cripe was the 16 year-old Spring Hill High School student that died on April 26, 2017.

The final cause of death was determined to be due to a caffeine-induced cardiac event causing a probable arrhythmia.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts is releasing the name of the individual who was killed this morning at 5:45 a.m. after being involved in a single-vehicle collision on I-126 at I-26 Eastbound, Columbia, SC.

Bret Lee Antonucci, date of birth 09/11/1984, of Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC, was the unrestrained driver of a vehicle that left the roadway and struck a tree.  Mr. Antonucci was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.  His cause of death was due to blunt force trauma.  

The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

Marcus K. Roseborough, date of birth 10/25/1991, of Chalice Lane, Columbia, SC, was transported from the scene by Richland County EMS to Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital ER where he died at 9:21 p.m.  An autopsy indicated that the cause of death was due to gunshot wounds to the upper body.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts is releasing the name of the individual who died as a result of being involved in a two-vehicle collision yesterday at 7:30 p.m. on Garners Ferry Road at McEntire Air Base, Eastover, SC.

Maurice Shaw, date of birth 11/14/1972, of Tufton Court, Cayce, SC, was the driver of a motorcycle that was struck by a car.  Mr. Shaw was transported by Richland County EMS to Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital where he died at 8:32 p.m.  He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.  An autopsy indicated that the cause of death was due to head trauma.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts is releasing the name of the 16 year old student who died yesterday afternoon at Palmetto Health Parkridge Hospital.   The student at Spring Hill High School in Chapin, SC was transported to the emergency room by Richland County EMS after he collapsed in the classroom.

Davis Allen Cripe, date of birth 02/11/2001, of Edgewood Court, Chapin, SC, died at 3:40 p.m. in the emergency room.  The cause of death is pending.   An autopsy that was performed this morning was inconclusive.  Further testing is being performed with results expected in the next two weeks.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts is releasing the name of the individual who died as a result of being involved in a single-vehicle collision last night at 7:31 p.m. on I-77 at the exit ramp to SC Highway 12, Columbia, SC.

Charles A. Altman, date of birth 11/21/1990, of Blackville Road, Gaston, SC, was the driver of a motorcycle that left the roadway and struck a tree.  Mr. Altman was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.  He died at the scene.  An autopsy conducted this morning indicated that the cause of death was due to blunt trauma to the chest.

The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

Sean Crosby White, date of birth 05/10/1976, of Horseshoe Drive, Columbia, SC, was the driver of a motorcycle that collided with a tow truck.  Mr. White was transported from the scene by Richland County EMS to Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital where he died at 10:15 p.m.  His cause of death was due to multiple trauma.

The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

Marlin Terrell Butler, date of birth 05/14/1973, of Candwenn Court, Columbia, SC, died at the scene.  An autopsy indicated that Mr. Butler died from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts is releasing the names and causes of death of the inmates who died yesterday morning between 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. at Kirkland Correctional Institution on Broad River Road, Columbia, SC after incidents involving two other inmates.

Jimmy Ham, date of birth 08/18/1960, died from asphyxiation due to manual strangulation according to an autopsy performed this morning.

William Scruggs, date of birth 10/30/1972, died from asphyxiation due to strangulation and mechanical compression of the chest according to an autopsy performed this morning.

John Tely King, date of birth 08/21/1964, died from asphyxiation due to strangulation with an electrical cord according to an autopsy performed this morning.

Jason Howard Kelley, date of birth 07/07/1981, died from asphyxiation due to strangulation according to an autopsy performed this morning.

Margaret K. Hooks, date of birth 09/03/1992, of Koon Road, Columbia, SC, was transported from the scene by Richland County EMS and taken to Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital, where she died at 4:58 p.m.  An autopsy indicated that Ms. Hooks died from a gunshot wound to the head.

William C. Dial, date of birth 08/14/1960, of McCords Ferry Road, Eastover, SC, died at Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital after being struck by a vehicle as previously reported.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts is releasing information regarding a pedestrian who died after being struck by a vehicle last night sometime prior to 10:00 p.m. in the 4200 block of Leesburg Road, Hopkins, SC.

The identity of the 56 year old male is being withheld at this time until next of kin can be notified.  The victim was transported from the scene by Richland County EMS to Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital ER where he died at 10:12 p.m.  An autopsy indicated that the cause of death was due to blunt trauma.

The Columbia Police Department is investigating the incident.  An update will be provided when next of kin has been notified.

Ellis Hawkins, date of birth 05/03/2000, of Ballybridle Lane, Blythewood, SC, was a restrained rear-seat passenger who was  transported from the scene by Richland County EMS to Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital where he died at 9:21 p.m.  An autopsy indicated that Mr. Hawkins died from multiple trauma due to the collision.

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC

The Richland County Coroner has released the names of the two individuals who died after being involved in a 2-car collision on I-20 Westbound at Exit 71 in the early morning hours of March 9, 2017, between 1:00 a.m. and 1:25 a.m.

The first victim tentatively identified as Kekima Lashaun Alexander, date of birth August 14, 1978, of E. 140 St., Bronx, New York, died from multiple blunt force injuries.  Mr. Alexander was changing the right rear tire of the vehicle on the shoulder of I-20 when it was struck by another vehicle.

Latoya Nicole Garcia, date of birth August 10, 1985, of Bariboo Road, Orangeburg, SC, also died from multiple blunt force injuries. She was a passenger in the vehicle that was struck.

An 11-month old infant was also in the vehicle when it was struck.  The infant was in a car seat and did not receive serious injury.  The infant is the child of Mr. Alexander and Ms. Garcia.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts has released the name of the individual who has died after being involved in a motor vehicle versus tree collision on March 2, 2017, at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Ridge Road at Wolf Laurel Lane, Hopkins, SC.

Beatrix B. Bagnal, date of birth July 21, 1964, of S. Wise Drive, Oswego, SC was transported by RC EMS to Palmetto Health Richland Medical Center. Ms. Bagnal died as a result of blunt force trauma she sustained in the incident on March 14, 2017, at 11:52 p.m.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts has released the name of the individual who died Thursday, March 16, 2017, around 7:15 p.m. after being involved in a head-on vehicle vs. vehicle collision on I-77 near mile marker 11.

Harry B. Williams, date of birth December 10, 1950, of Cedar Terrace, Columbia, SC, died at the scene after the vehicle, in which he was the restrained driver, crossed the median on I-77 Southbound between Forest Drive and Ft. Jackson Blvd. and hit another vehicle head-on. Mr. Williams died from blunt force trauma.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate.

Kevin Anthony Jones, date of birth 12/01/1995 of Gatlin Drive, Columbia, SC was an unrestrained rear-seat passenger who was ejected from the vehicle.  Mr. Jones was transported from the scene by Richland County EMS to Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital where he died at 6:42 p.m.  His cause of death was due to blunt force trauma to the head.

Krystin Prince, date of birth 08/01/1992, of Brook Pines Drive, Columbia, SC, was the unrestrained driver of the vehicle and was ejected.   Ms. Prince was transported from the scene of the collision by Richland County EMS to Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital where she died last night 9:30 p.m.  Her cause of death is due to blunt force trauma to the head.

Pierre Tanaree Wilson, date of birth, January 9, 1993, of Faulkland Road, Columbia, S.C., was transported by RCEMS to Palmetto Richland Hospital where he died at 2:02 a.m.  Coroner Watts stated that Mr. Wilson died from a gunshot wound to the upper body.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department continues the investigation.

Eric Jerome Karnickey, Jr., date of birth 04/04/1991, of Oakmont Drive, Columbia, SC was the unrestrained driver of a vehicle that was involved in the collision.  Mr. Karnickey died at the scene.  An autopsy performed this morning indicated that the cause of death was due to blunt trauma to the head and neck.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts has released the name of the individual who was involved in a pedestrian vs. motor vehicle incident on January 19, 2017, at 11:02 a.m. at 4203 Courtridge Street, Columbia, SC.

Djon D’Angelo McDaniel, date of birth September 19, 1998, of Slighs Avenue, Columbia, SC was transported to Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital by Richland County EMS and was pronounced dead at 1:12 a.m. this morning. The Coroner stated that Mr. McDaniel died from complications of blunt force trauma.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate.
