Cathy Rawls earned an Associate Degree from the University Of South Carolina College Of General Studies in 1973. She also has an Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies. Cathy began working with the Coroner’s Office in 1980 and was the first female to be commissioned as a Deputy Coroner in Richland County. She has been the Chief Deputy Coroner since 1996 and was certified as a Registered Medicolegal Death Investigator through the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators in September 2009. Cathy is very active in the SC Coroners Association and has continuously served in various positions and on the Board of Directors over the past thirty years. In 2008, Cathy received the Sue Townsend Award given by the SC Coroners Association for recognition of her service not only to Richland County but to Coroners all over the state of South Carolina. She is currently serving as the Training Director for the association for the fourth time.
