RICHLAND COUNTY, SC — Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford has released the identities of the individuals who died as a result of a fatal shooting that occurred on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
“We must remember the bravery and dedication of those who serve to protect us. The officer who was killed was not just a member of our law enforcement community; he was a husband, father, friend, and a devoted servant to our community. Officer Christopher Delong’s death exemplifies the danger that our officers face every day, putting their lives on the line to ensure our safety.
The details surrounding the incident are still emerging, but what we do know is that this act of violence has taken a toll not only on the officers involved, but also on their families, friends, and all of us who hold the values of justice and safety dear. We must extend our deepest condolences to the grieving family of our fallen officer and offer our support to the other officer involved, who is facing an incredibly difficult time.
The other individual who died today has been identified as Adam Dowdy, 33 years old. This is still an active investigation. Autopsies will be performed in the morning by the Richland County Coroner’s Office.”Coroner Rutherford states.
